Ever wonder where
carpeting comes from? Starting out as a barge of plastic garbage, the
US is responsible for sending China Nearly six tons of recycled
plastics per year. Having some of the poorest air-quality in the
world, Wu-Han China melts the plastic goods to a liquid for refining
purposes. Various polymers are added for structural purposes and
dried in the form of beads or pellets of various colors. These
pellets are shipped off to carpet manufacturers and fed into giant
hoppers by factory workers, where they are melted down and spun into
strands to be glued onto backing material. The entire process is
extremely toxic, causing lung disease and other respiratory issues
for factory workers. Large plumes of toxic smoke can be seen pouring
from smoke stacks nearly 24-hours per day. Special equipment spin
plastic carpeting into giant rolls and then cut to length, packaged
and placed on ships to be sent all over the world. Design rooms
display brilliantly colored carpeting of all types for consumer
purchase, to be installed in homes, offices and work places. Most
often referred to as polyester, this carpet type is made from
recycled plastics that the USA pays China to take off our hands.
China in turn makes cheap plastic carpeting and sells it back to the
American consumer. Other than killing its own people, China makes out
like a bandit on either side of the equation. On the bright side,
certified green cleaning methodologies help conceal the inconvenient
truth behind the carpet manufacturing industry. Although inexpensive
and stain resistant, it is not nearly as resilient or durable as
nylon carpet fibers. Because manufacturing cartels in China have
direct influence over what is sold in America, salesmen are
unknowingly educated and instructed to sale polyester and other
plastics over higher quality products at nearly the same price point.
Although plastic fibers tend to be very stain resistant, they are
wear out much more quickly, nearly three to five times more quickly.
Nylon is probably one of the most durable carpeting available,
followed by far more expensive natural fibers like cotton and wool.
With nearly 20 years experience professionally cleaning carpets,
nylon carpeting often cleans-up far better than polyester and has a
longer life-span as well. As debris accumulation occurs, polyester is
prone to wear damage, cause by the scratching and tearing on abrasive
soiling like dirt, grit, sand, etc. For this reason carpet and
furniture manufacturers recommend that the be professionally cleaned
at least once per year, however the know that this is extremely
unlikely. If only people would have their carpets and upholstery
professionally treated on regular intervals, their expected
life-spans could easily be doubled or tripled. Unfortunately, living
in a disposable world, the average consumer is usually obliviously
unconcerned. So, adopting the nonsense, apartment management will
generally replace polyester carpeting upon tenant turn-over, because
it is likely to be completely worn-down or ruined. Also, as
consumers, we are conditioned to believe that everything must have
the appearance of a new pristine look, regardless of the actually
cost. Nylon that is well taken care if could easily save consumers
time and money in the long run if they were not trained to be so
narrow minded and ego-centric. The number one way the consumer can
extend the useful longevity of polyester carpeting is via thorough
vacuuming on a regular basis. Did you know that carpeting is capable
of hiding up to one pound of debris per foot? Thorough vacuuming with
commercial equipment is capable of removing nearly 70%.
Unfortunately, even if one tried, the effort is likely to be in vein
because most consumer vacuums lack the ability to effectively
lift-out foreign debris lurking deep below the surface. A good vacuum
must have an excellent beater bar for bouncing debris, a strong
vacuum motor of generating suction and a HEPA filtration system that
will not release particles into the air. Vacuums purchased from
big-box stores lack nearly all these areas, with a couple exceptions
like the Shark. Personally, I recommend Kirby. Although heavy and
noisy, it is extremely effective at pulling heavier abrasive debris
from carpet piling of all lengths. When hiring a professional
residential carpet cleaning company, if they neglect vacuuming as
part of the service, it is highly recommended finding a company that
does. Perhaps increasing the over-all cost, thorough vacuuming with
commercial equipment will greatly improve the thoroughness of a deep
carpet cleaning service. Additionally, hiring a service that is
experienced, licensed and insured is highly encouraged as well.
